Roccastrada
History
The origins of Roccastrada can be traced back to Etruscan and Roman times, as suggested by some archaeological finds found in the area. However, the documented history of the country begins in the Middle Ages.
The name “Roccastrada” comes from the presence of a fortress, a medieval fortress, which stood in the area. The construction of the fortress was started by the Aldobrandeschi Counts, a powerful noble family of the time, in the tenth century. Over the centuries, the fortress was the subject of various conflicts between the various local lords.
In the thirteenth century, Roccastrada became part of the territory of the Republic of Siena. During this time, the town prospered thanks to agriculture and trade. . However, in 1555, with the fall of the Republic of Siena, Roccastrada passed under the rule of Cosimo I de’ Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Over the following centuries, Roccastrada experienced periods of growth and decline, influenced by events such as wars and epidemics. During the Italian Risorgimento of the 19th century, the country participated in the movement for national unity.
The hamlets of Roccastrada, such as Sticciano, Ribolla, Torniella and Sassofortino, also have a history rooted in the Middle Ages. Many of these hamlets were originally small fortified settlements, grown around castles or defense towers. Over the centuries, many of these structures have been transformed or demolished, but some evidence of the historical past is still visible.
Today, Roccastrada is a quiet Tuscan town, surrounded by picturesque countryside. The old town still retains many traces of its medieval history, with narrow streets, cozy squares and old buildings. The region is also appreciated for its natural beauty, with green hills and characteristic landscapes of the Tuscan Maremma.

- Parco delle Piscine Naturali di Sassoforte: A nature reserve located near Roccastrada, known for its natural pools and the beauty of the landscape. It is an ideal place for walking and hiking in nature.
- Hamlet of Ribolla: Another charming village near Roccastrada, with a Romanesque church and an authentic rural environment.
- Fraction of Sticciano: Characterized by an ancient church and a medieval tower, Sticciano is a hamlet that retains its historical charm.
- Torniella: A hamlet located in a panoramic position with a spectacular view of the Maremma. It preserves a medieval village and a Romanesque church.
- Rocca Aldobrandesca di Roccatederighi: Like Roccastrada, Roccatederighi also preserves a medieval fortress that originated from the domination of the Aldobrandeschi. The fortress offers a panoramic view of the Maremma and the surrounding hills.
- Church of San Martino: This Romanesque church dates back to the 13th century and is dedicated to San Martino. Inside, you can admire frescoes and religious works of art.
- Piazza del Popolo: The heart of the historic center of Roccatederighi, a welcoming square surrounded by historic buildings, bars and restaurants.
- Walls: Roccatederighi still retains features of its medieval walls, which contributes to the charm of the village.
