Castiglione della Pescaia

Castiglione della Pescaia

History

Castiglione della Pescaia is a charming seaside village located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany. Its history dates back to Etruscan times, when the area was already frequented for commercial and fishing purposes. Over the centuries, the town has been contested by several powers, including the Romans and the Lombards. During the medieval period, the village developed around a fortress, built to defend against Saracen raids.

Over the centuries, Castiglione della Pescaia has maintained its historical character, with winding streets and a breathtaking sea view. Today it’s a popular tourist destination, with golden beaches, well-preserved old town and a variety of activities for visitors.

Punta Ala:

Punta Ala is a coastal resort located south of Castiglione della Pescaia, known for natural beauty and marina. The area has a long history linked to the sea, with ancient trade routes passing through this coast. During the medieval period, Punta Ala was under the rule of several noble families, but became more important in the 20th century with the development of tourism.

Today Punta Ala is famous for its modern marina, golf courses, pristine beaches and the natural beauty of Diaccia Botrona, a nature reserve that stretches along the coast with WWF oasis.

Vetulonia:

Vetulonia is an Etruscan archaeological site located inland, near Castiglione della Pescaia. It was an important Etruscan centre during the 7th and 6th centuries B.C. and reached its peak during the Hellenistic period.

The ruins of Vetulonia include tombs, walls and other archaeological remains that testify to the richness and importance of the city in antiquity. Vetulonia is famous for the Tomb of the Diavolino, a chamber tomb with a terracotta sarcophagus representing a winged demon. This site offers a valuable window on Etruscan life and culture.

During the summer, Castiglione della Pescaia, Punta Ala and Vetulonia offer a fascinating mix of history, natural beauty and culture, attracting visitors from all over the world to discover the riches sites of Tuscany.
